An amazing emotional love storyI was drawn to this because of the author, have read many of Amanda’s books。But this book really drew me in because it was about a 94 year old woman, who goes back in time to tell her story。I have a 94 year old Nan, who also lived through the war, and was in the land army。 My nans job definitely wasn’t as important as Mollys in the war, but she also suffered lost loves through her life。 Mollys life was interesting, heartbreaking and she was so brave! An Ordinary Life begins at the end of Molly's life。 She worked for the Foreign Office in London in the 1940s with several of her friends。 Molly is approached for a special assignment which changes her life and forces her to make a very difficult decision。 I really enjoyed following Molly in her work and travels。 There were so many emotions in this book; love, sorrow, joy, laughter, loss。 Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review。 An Ordinary Life begins at the end of Molly's life。 She worked for the Foreign Office in London in the 1940s with several of her friends。 Molly is approached for a special assignment which changes her life and forces her to make a very difficult decision。 I really enjoyed following Molly in her work and travels。 There were so many emotions in this book; love, sorrow, joy, laughter, loss。 Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

What an absolutely delightful, sweet story! I was definitely engaged from the beginning with Molly's life and mourned the death of Johan and losing Geer。 Also, her agony in her decision about Joe and the challenges she faces because of the war and society were heartbreaking。I did feel like the story needed some stronger conflicts in the middle。 While I realize the point of the book was to show that even "an ordinary life" can be extraordinary to the person living it, it felt like the plot lost a What an absolutely delightful, sweet story! An extraordinary novel!Wow Amanda has such a skill of writing novels that trap you in within the first couple of pages。 An Ordinary Life is no exception。 At 94 Molly is putting pen to paper to explain to Joe a secret she promised to tell。 We are then treated to her ordinary life as she recaps her life from the age of 18。 There are highs and lows (without giving too much away) and Molly explains her time during the Second World War and her experiences during those times。 Her family plays a part i An extraordinary novel!Wow Amanda has such a skill of writing novels that trap you in within the first couple of pages。 An Ordinary Life is no exception。 At 94 Molly is putting pen to paper to explain to Joe a secret she promised to tell。 We are then treated to her ordinary life as she recaps her life from the age of 18。 There are highs and lows (without giving too much away) and Molly explains her time during the Second World War and her experiences during those times。 Her family plays a part in her life in special ways and at times we can laugh with Molly but also cry。 A truly heartfelt story of love lost and found。 。。。more

I’ve read a few books by this author and the main thing that sticks in my mind is the depth of her characters。 Molly at age 94 is now in a hospital with a stroke and broken bones from a fall。 She seems like the typical elderly woman, but no one who knows her has an idea that her life has been anything but ordinary。 While she was working in an ordinary job she sometimes went out Circumstances a group of friends and met a young man (the brother of one of her friends)。 They fell in love quickly and I’ve read a few books by this author and the main thing that sticks in my mind is the depth of her characters。 Molly at age 94 is now in a hospital with a stroke and broken bones from a fall。 She seems like the typical elderly woman, but no one who knows her has an idea that her life has been anything but ordinary。 While she was working in an ordinary job she sometimes went out Circumstances a group of friends and met a young man (the brother of one of her friends)。 They fell in love quickly and only saw each other before he left for France during WWII。 Circumstances made it impossible for her to continue with her job and one of her friends brought her to a place for a different job for the British, working for the Resistance in France。 Her life took many twists and turns and was anything but ordinary! Where to begin? An Ordinary Life by Amanda Prowse was so exquisitely written that after I started it, I could think of little else until I had finished the last page。 I have never read anything from this author before, but now, cannot wait to read more。 The book begins with the protagonist, 94 year old Molly having a bad fall down the stairs , It continues on with her story from the 1940s London during WWII to the present (1994)。 Much of what she goes through in her life is emotionally painful, Where to begin? This is a book that shows that no life is completely “ordinary”, and that everyone has their secrets。 In this book, mainly set in the Second World War, life is fragile but love and memories can last。 This is the story of a woman's life, her work, the risks she took, but most importantly, her love。 Molly begins the book as a ninety four year old woman, struggling to fulfill a promise, to reveal a secret central to her life。 As she looks back, remembers a brief and glorious time, a time of worry, This is a book that shows that no life is completely “ordinary”, and that everyone has their secrets。 In this book, mainly set in the Second World War, life is fragile but love and memories can last。 This is the story of a woman's life, her work, the risks she took, but most importantly, her love。 Molly begins the book as a ninety four year old woman, struggling to fulfill a promise, to reveal a secret central to her life。 As she looks back, remembers a brief and glorious time, a time of worry, fear and overwhelming longing, the reader is involved in a story of love, loss, fear and much more。 The food, the clothes, the objects descriptive give texture to a story that can be recognised by any reader, while the dialogue gives life to characters despite a distance of time。 This is a book where the characters really come alive, especially Molly, whose doubts, fears and so many other emotions seem so real。 This is writing, a novel, which lingers in the memory in all its colours and variations。 I was very pleased to have the opportunity to read and review this book。After the older Molly has a nasty fall, she begins to remember her story, to go back to being eighteen years old in December 1943。 Working in Bloomsbury, London as a senior translator for the Ministry of Information, she is a bright and ambitious young woman with a good friend, Geer, who drags her to a dance to meet her brother。 Her attraction to Johan is immediate and total; happily it is mutual and each word, action and moment becomes vital to both of them。 Snatched moments of love, spent in London and later elsewhere, become precious to Molly, diverting her from her work, her ambition, her petulant mother who she lives with, even a war that dominates everyone’s life。 A sudden tragic discovery robs her of this blissful state, leaving her with a growing realisation that a new life beckons, very different from anything that she could have expected。 The decisions that she must make, the special task that she chooses to embark on, fills her life, works on her brokenness, and leaves her a different person, a casualty of war and much more。 Throughout this time she must depend on her family, made to realise that the heightened emotion she is enduring is beyond her alone, that she needs help from others to cope with so much, and express her greatest love。This is a powerful novel that reflects the fact that war is more than a state of fear or even loss, that love can dominate a life in so many ways, that survival is more than bodily safety。 A mission of incredible difficulty and danger is not the only story in this book, just as this is more than just an imaginative account of wartime life。 It is the intense story of a woman who lives an extraordinary life of contrast and challenge, of love and sadness, but also purpose and small comforts。 Prowse has created Molly as a woman of great depth and reality, her emotions and reactions though described by a narrator are vivid and understandable。 There have been many books that deal with a woman’s wartime experiences, but this one places those feelings in the context of a long life, experiences that however brief are central to all that comes afterwards, colouring everything。 The secret that Molly is trying to reveal is something and everything, a fact that has changed lives and made her own existence anything but an ordinary life。 。。。more

4 stars。 I have mixed emotions about this book。 Most times I was fully immersed and fully engaged with the characters, but at times the story felt disjointed and I almost felt as though I had missed something。 The title of the book confused me at first, as Molly's life was anything but ordinary in what I would be considered a pretty clear standard。 Living in WWII London wasn't easy on anyone, but Molly's life was on track and she knew where she was headed。 Then one night out with her best friend 4 stars。 I have mixed emotions about this book。 Most times I was fully immersed and fully engaged with the characters, but at times the story felt disjointed and I almost felt as though I had missed something。 The title of the book confused me at first, as Molly's life was anything but ordinary in what I would be considered a pretty clear standard。 Living in WWII London wasn't easy on anyone, but Molly's life was on track and she knew where she was headed。 Then one night out with her best friend changed the entire trajectory of her life。 Falling in love, being separated during the war, making the ultimate sacrifice with her sister, and being traumatized while helping the French Resistance- all sent her on a difficult journey that lasted until her 94th year。 All those painful memories, all the friendships made and lost, all the lessons she learned over the years。 But for her generation- Molly's was not an uncommon story。Overall a powerful story and I did shed tears at times with the choices Molly had to make and the things she went through。 I looked forward to following this story to the end, so in that respect it was worth the 4 stars。 I will definitely go and look into more from this author。 A mostly clean book, but I think probably too heavy for my teenager to read (for my own future reference when looking for books for my bookworm)。 Thanks to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

I've read a couple of this author's books before and really enjoyed them。 An Ordinary Life particularly appealed to me as I always enjoy books that look back over what is essentially an ordinary life。 The life in this book is that of 94 year old Molly。 The book begins with her writing a very important letter and then having a very serious fall down the stairs。 We are then taken back to the 1940s as Molly meets a man who makes her heart sing, does some very important war work, but ultimately has I've read a couple of this author's books before and really enjoyed them。 An Ordinary Life particularly appealed to me as I always enjoy books that look back over what is essentially an ordinary life。 The life in this book is that of 94 year old Molly。 The book begins with her writing a very important letter and then having a very serious fall down the stairs。 We are then taken back to the 1940s as Molly meets a man who makes her heart sing, does some very important war work, but ultimately has to make a heartbreaking decision。This is a book that is full of the author's trademark warmth and it's a story of the sacrifices made by women when society and circumstances left them no choice。 Molly is brave and strong and I liked her a lot。 The story is quite a sad one in many ways, with some moments of happiness shining through at intervals during Molly's life。 It's very much focused on what happens to her in the 40s though, with then brief sections set throughout the ensuing decades。 I would have liked those sections to be longer as I really liked seeing how she was coping with the consequences of her decision and in many ways I preferred her ordinary life to her moments of derring-do。An Ordinary Life is a sometimes gritty, sometimes heartbreaking, and sometimes uplifting story of a woman who has to live with her choices for her whole life。 It certainly made me think about how precious life is。 It's a very easy read with a wonderful main character in Molly and although I guessed a lot of what happened, I found it to be a thought-provoking and interesting read。 。。。more
